How to become a data analyst

A data analyst takes information a business already has, often a messy spreadsheet or a database export, and turns it into something a manager can act on: a clear chart, a dashboard or a short written answer to a specific question.

This is the route we teach, in four stages. You can start with the first stage using only Excel, and add the technical tools as you go.

What the work pays: the entry figure we sourced is Rs 38,190 to Rs 101,116 a month across Pakistan (12 salaries), read on 3 August 2026. Source More on Data Science careers in Pakistan.

The route, step by step

Step 1: Spreadsheets

Most analysis in Pakistani offices still starts in Excel. Learn to sort, filter, use formulas and pivot tables, and handle data without breaking it.

Step 2: Querying

When the data lives in a database, SQL is how you ask it questions. Learn to select, join and summarise, and to prepare data so the numbers are trustworthy.

Skills: SQL, Data Preparation.

Go deeper: Data Analytics, Machine Learning

Step 3: Telling the story

An analysis nobody understands changes nothing. Learn to choose the right chart, build a dashboard in Power BI and present the answer in plain language.

Skills: Data Visualisation, Power BI, Presentation Skills.

Start free: Power BI Basics, Data Visualisation with Python

Go deeper: Data Analytics

Step 4: Going deeper

Statistics tells you whether a difference is real or chance, and Python with Pandas handles data too large or too messy for a spreadsheet.

Skills: Statistical Analysis, Python, Pandas & NumPy.

Questions

Can I become a data analyst without a degree?

Many analysts start without a specific degree. What matters is being able to show work: a dashboard you built, a question you answered from real data, and how you checked it.

Should I learn Power BI or Python first?

Start with Excel and SQL, then Power BI, which gets you to visible results quickly. Add Python once you are comfortable with the basics.

How this route was put together: Assembled from the published BvLogic curricula and, where a course is mapped to a NAVTTC national standard, from that standard's own competency list. It is not employer research: no employer in the pipeline has been researched for skill demand yet, and until that happens this list says what we teach a junior to do, not what a named company has told us it wants.
