How to use ChatGPT well

What it is good at

ChatGPT is a chat assistant built on a large language model. It is good at explaining a concept at the level you ask for, summarising a long text, drafting an email or a proposal, translating between English and Urdu, suggesting an outline, finding the bug in a short piece of code, and playing the role of a patient tutor who never tires of a follow up question.

It is weaker at anything that needs facts it cannot see: recent news, prices, a specific law, your company's own data. For those, give it the material or verify what it says.

A prompt that works

A good prompt tells the assistant who it is helping, what you want, in what format, and what to avoid. Compare asking for a cover letter with asking for a short cover letter for a junior data analyst role at a Karachi bank, for a fresh graduate with an internship in Excel reporting, in plain English without buzzwords. The second gets a usable draft on the first try.

When the first answer misses, do not start over. Tell it what was wrong and ask for a revision. The conversation is the tool.

What to check every time

Names, dates, figures and quotations: it can invent any of them. Sources: ask for them, then open them yourself. Code: run it. Anything legal, medical or financial: treat the answer as a starting point for a question to a professional, never as the answer.

Never paste passwords, bank details, customer lists or anything under a confidentiality agreement. Assume what you type may be stored.

Uses for study, freelancing and office work

Students use it to turn a chapter into questions and test themselves, to get a second explanation of a topic the lecture rushed through, and to improve the English of an assignment they wrote themselves. Freelancers use it to understand a client's brief, to draft a proposal in the client's tone, and to produce variations of a design caption or an ad. Office teams use it for first drafts of reports and emails, for meeting summaries, and for turning rough notes into a clean document.

Questions

Is using ChatGPT for assignments cheating?

Using it to learn and to improve your own work is study; submitting its text as yours is not. Most institutions in Pakistan now say so in their policies. Keep your own thinking in the work and use the tool for explanation, practice and polish.

Which is better, the free or the paid version?

The free version is enough to learn and for most daily tasks. Pay only when you hit its limits on length, speed or newer features in real work.

Does it understand Roman Urdu?

Mostly, for short messages. Writing your prompt in plain English or proper Urdu gives more reliable answers.
