Social Media Marketing Basics · Lesson 1 of 6
What social media marketing is for
Separate vanity metrics from business outcomes, and pick the right platforms for a Pakistani audience.
A business page exists to produce one of four things: enquiries, sales, bookings, or people who will buy later. Followers, likes and views are not among them — they are indicators, sometimes useful, frequently misleading. A page with 50,000 followers and no enquiries is a hobby; a page with 800 followers producing twelve WhatsApp orders a week is a business. Beginners chase the first and get hired for the second.
The platforms that matter in Pakistan, honestly:
FACEBOOK still has the broadest reach across ages and cities, and Marketplace and Groups are genuine sales channels that get ignored because Facebook is considered old. For many local businesses — furniture, property, services, used goods — it is where the buyers actually are.
INSTAGRAM is where visual products sell: clothing, beauty, food, décor, anything photogenic. It skews younger and urban. DMs are the sales channel, not the profile.
TIKTOK has the fastest reach growth in the country and the cheapest attention available right now. Video only, and the format rewards personality over polish — a phone-shot clip regularly outperforms an expensive production.
WHATSAPP is the one Pakistani businesses underuse most and where the money actually closes. Almost every social sale in this country ends in a WhatsApp conversation. WhatsApp Business gives you a catalogue, quick replies and labels for free, and a broadcast list of past buyers is the highest-converting audience any small business has.
LINKEDIN matters only for B2B and services — recruitment, software, consulting.
The practical rule for a small business: pick TWO platforms and do them properly. A business posting badly on five channels performs worse than one posting well on two, because consistency and reply speed matter more than presence.
For a real business (yours, a family shop, a client you would like), write: what a 'result' actually is for them (enquiries? orders? bookings?), which two platforms their buyers genuinely use, and where the sale would close. If the answer to the last one is WhatsApp, that tells you where most of your effort belongs.
