YouTube Channel Growth · Lesson 1 of 5
Why YouTube compounds
Understand what makes it different from social feeds.
A social media post has a life of about two days. A YouTube video is found through search and recommendation for years, which means the work accumulates rather than evaporating.
That is the whole argument for the platform. A video answering a question people keep asking is still bringing viewers in three years, and a hundred such videos is an asset rather than a content schedule.
What the algorithm actually optimises for. Watch time and satisfaction, not views. YouTube wants people to keep watching YouTube, so it promotes videos that hold attention and that people click when offered. Views are the result rather than the target.
Which means two numbers decide everything. Click through rate, meaning whether people click when your video is shown, which is the thumbnail and the title. And retention, meaning whether they keep watching, which is the content and the pacing. Everything else follows from those two.
A video with a high click rate and poor retention is punished, which is why misleading thumbnails stop working after the first video.
In Pakistan the opportunity is specific. Urdu content is under supplied relative to demand in many useful categories, and monetisation is available, and a channel serving a Pakistani audience in the language they actually search in has far less competition than an English channel serving everybody.
And it is slow. Most channels take a year to reach anything. The people who succeed are the ones who were still publishing in month ten.
Search YouTube for a question your customers ask, in Urdu. Note how few good answers exist compared with the English equivalent.
