Operations Management · Lesson 1 of 5
Making the same good thing happen repeatedly
Understand what operations is for.
Operations is the work of making something happen reliably, at the right quality, at a cost that works, over and over. It is unglamorous and it is what most businesses actually live or die by.
The difference from a project. A project has an end. Operations is the repeating work: fulfilling orders, delivering a service, serving customers, producing something. The skills overlap and the mindset differs, because operations is about consistency rather than completion.
What you are balancing. Quality, speed, cost and flexibility. Improving one usually costs another, and an organisation that has not decided which matters most for its situation ends up mediocre at all four. A business competing on fast delivery and one competing on low price should be run differently, and copying the practices of the other produces confusion.
Where operations problems actually come from, and it is rarely people not trying. Inconsistent processes, where everybody does it slightly differently. Unclear ownership. Information not reaching the person who needs it. Work waiting between stages. Rework because something was wrong the first time. And capacity mismatched to demand.
The first task is always to see the work. Most operational problems are invisible because nobody has written down what actually happens, and what people believe happens is frequently not what happens.
Start by following one order or one request end to end, yourself, and noting every stage and every wait.
Follow one order or request through your whole process yourself, noting every stage and every wait. What you find will surprise you.
کوئی ایک آرڈر یا درخواست خود پورے عمل سے گزار کر دیکھیں، ہر مرحلہ اور ہر انتظار نوٹ کریں۔ جو ملے گا وہ حیران کرے گا۔
