E-Commerce Basics · Lesson 1 of 6

What e-commerce really is here

Understand the Pakistani online selling landscape and the three routes into it.

E-commerce in Pakistan is not one business. It is three, and confusing them is how people lose money.

ROUTE ONE — MARKETPLACE SELLING. You list on Daraz (domestically) or Amazon/eBay/Etsy (internationally). The marketplace brings the buyers; you bring the product and the service. Advantage: traffic exists from day one. Cost: commission on every sale, rules you do not control, and competition sitting on the same page as you, usually on price.

ROUTE TWO — YOUR OWN STORE. A Shopify store, a WooCommerce site, or an Instagram shop with a WhatsApp checkout — the shape most small Pakistani sellers actually start with. Advantage: no commission, you own the customer relationship and the data. Cost: nobody knows you exist, so every visitor must be bought or earned through marketing. This is the route where 'built the store, made no sales' happens, and it happens constantly.

ROUTE THREE — SOCIAL SELLING. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, with orders arriving in DMs and WhatsApp. It is the largest informal channel in the country, it needs almost no setup, and it is where a genuine number of Pakistani home businesses earn real money. Its ceiling is operational: manual order-taking breaks somewhere around 20-30 orders a day.

What sells here, from what is visibly working: clothing above all (unstitched fabric, ready-to-wear, kids' wear), beauty and skincare, mobile accessories, home and kitchen items, and anything a Pakistani manufacturer already makes well — which is the Gujranwala, Sialkot and Chiniot argument this academy's city pages make.

And the honest framing to hold from lesson one: e-commerce is a LOGISTICS and MARGIN business wearing a technology costume. The website is the easy part — a weekend. Whether you make money is decided by what you buy things for, what it costs to deliver them, and how many come back.

Try it yourself

Pick one product you could genuinely sell — something you can source locally today. Write down: where you would get it, what it costs you, what similar items sell for on Daraz and on Instagram, and which of the three routes fits it. Keep this product; every later lesson uses it.
