Reputation is built in small decisions

Almost nobody faces a single dramatic ethical test. Reputations are built and lost in ordinary decisions that seemed too small to matter at the time.

The small things people remember. Whether you did what you said. Whether you admitted the mistake or let somebody else absorb it. Whether you took credit that was not yours. Whether you said the same thing about somebody in the room and out of it. Whether you were honest when nobody would have known.

These accumulate invisibly. Nobody announces that they have decided you are reliable, or that they have decided you are not. The judgement forms over months from a hundred small observations and then it is very difficult to change.

Integrity is not the same as being nice. It frequently means saying an unwelcome thing, refusing a request, or naming a problem that would be easier to leave alone. Somebody who is pleasant and avoids every difficult truth is not acting with integrity, they are avoiding cost.

The test that works. Would you be comfortable if this were known? Not whether it is technically permitted, not whether others do it, but whether you would explain it plainly to somebody whose opinion you value.

And the hardest part is that the small compromises are reasonable individually. One slightly inflated number, one unreturned favour, one silence when you should have spoken. Each is defensible and the pattern is what defines you, and the pattern is visible to everybody except the person forming it.
