What the job actually is
Know what you would be doing and for whom.
A virtual assistant does the work a business owner should not be doing themselves: the administration, the scheduling, the inbox, the follow up, the research, the data entry, the coordination.
Why it is the easiest remote work to start. The barrier is organisation and reliability rather than a technical qualification. Somebody who is careful, communicates clearly and does what they said can begin without a degree or a portfolio of client work.
Who hires them. Small business owners, consultants, agencies, e-commerce sellers, real estate agents, coaches. Usually one person doing too much who has reached the point where administration is preventing the work that earns money.
What the work looks like in practice. Managing an inbox and replying to routine messages. Scheduling and rescheduling. Preparing documents and reports. Research, lists and data entry. Customer service messages. Social media scheduling. Invoicing and chasing payment. Coordinating with other suppliers.
What they are really buying. Not your time. They are buying not having to think about something. The assistant who says "I have handled it" is worth several times the one who asks three questions and hands the problem back.
The honest limitations. Entry level rates are low, particularly at the start, and the work can be repetitive. Progress comes from specialising: an assistant who knows e-commerce operations, or bookkeeping, or a specific industry, earns several times the general rate.
List every administrative task you already do well in your own life or work. That list is the starting point for what you can offer.
