Time Management · Lesson 1 of 5
You cannot manage time
Understand that the real problem is deciding, not scheduling.
Time passes at the same rate whatever you do. What you actually manage is attention and commitments, and almost every "time problem" is one of those two wearing a disguise.
Three things get called time management and only one of them is:
Too much work. No system fixes this. If eleven hours of work arrives every day, a better calendar produces a neater eleven hours. The answer is fewer commitments, more people, or lower standards on something, and all three are conversations, not apps.
Unclear priorities. You know what needs doing but not what matters most, so you do whatever is loudest. This is the common one, and it is fixable.
Avoidance. You know what matters, and you do email instead because the important thing is uncomfortable. No calendar has ever solved this.
Be honest about which one you have: because the remedies are different and people usually reach for the wrong one. Buying a planner to fix a workload problem is why so many systems get abandoned in week three.
The one question that does most of the work: *if I only finished one thing today, which one would make the day worth it?* Ask it before opening anything. It takes ten seconds and it is the difference between a busy day and a useful one.
Busy and productive are not the same. A day spent replying to forty messages feels like hard work and may have moved nothing. The feeling of effort is not evidence of progress, and it is the most misleading signal you will get.
For three days, write down at the end of each day what you actually spent time on, not what you planned. Then mark each item: too much work, unclear priorities, or avoidance. One category will dominate. That is your real problem, and the rest of this course is only useful to the extent it addresses it.
