Tax and Registration for Freelancers · Lesson 1 of 5
Why this is worth an afternoon
Understand what being undocumented costs you.
Most Pakistani freelancers do not file, and the reasons are understandable: it seems complicated, nobody explained it, and the income arrives from abroad so it feels separate from the system.
What that actually costs you.
Higher withholding everywhere. Non filers pay higher deduction rates on banking transactions, vehicle registration, property and several other things. For somebody with regular income, this alone frequently exceeds what filing would have cost.
No provable income. You cannot get a loan, a credit card, a business facility, or in many cases a visa, because none of them accept "I earn well, I just cannot show it."
Risk that grows. Foreign remittances are visible to the banking system. An unexplained pattern of inflows over several years is a larger problem to resolve than filing would have been.
Missed concessions. Pakistan has deliberately favourable treatment for documented IT and IT enabled services export income. Freelancers who do not document their income cannot claim any of it, which means the people avoiding the system are frequently the ones paying more than they need to.
One thing to say plainly before the rest. This course teaches the shape of the system: what the terms mean, what the steps are, and what to ask. It does not give rates or thresholds, because those change with every budget and any number written here would be wrong within a year. For your actual position, use the FBR's own material or a tax practitioner.
Check your filer status on the FBR active taxpayer list. Then find out what higher rate you paid on your last banking transaction as a non filer.
