SEO Fundamentals · Lesson 1 of 7
Understand crawling, indexing and ranking as three separate things that can each fail.
SEO makes sense once you know that three different things must happen, in order, before anyone can find you. Most SEO problems are actually a failure at one specific stage, and people waste months working on the wrong one.
1. Crawling. A program visits your page by following links. If nothing links to your page and it is not in your sitemap, it may never be visited at all.
2. Indexing. What it found gets stored and understood. A crawled page is not automatically an indexed one — a page can be visited and then judged not worth keeping, usually because it is thin, duplicated, or blocked by a tag telling the engine to ignore it.
3. Ranking. When somebody searches, indexed pages are ordered. This is the part everyone talks about, and it is the third stage — worrying about ranking while your page is not indexed is wasted effort.
So the first question about any page that gets no traffic is not how do I rank higher. It is: is it even indexed? You can check in seconds by searching for site:yourdomain.com and seeing what comes back.
What ranking actually weighs, in plain terms: does the page genuinely answer what the person searched for, is the site trustworthy, is the experience decent on a phone, and is there anything better available. There are many signals, nobody outside the company knows the exact recipe, and anyone claiming to is selling something.
One thing to internalise now. Search engines are trying to serve the person searching, not you. Every genuine SEO improvement is also an improvement for a real visitor. Every trick that helps you at the visitor's expense is temporary, because closing those gaps is the search engine's entire business.
Search `site:` followed by a website you know — a local business, your college. Count the indexed pages. If it shows far fewer than the site actually has, you have found an indexing problem, not a ranking one.
