Print on Demand · Lesson 1 of 5
Designs that sell while you sleep, or do not
Understand the model and its honest rate.
Print on demand means uploading a design, and when somebody orders a shirt, a mug or a poster with it, a supplier prints and ships it. You never hold stock.
Why it appeals. No inventory, no upfront cost, and a design you made once can sell indefinitely.
The honest picture. Most designs sell nothing. The people who earn from this have many designs, a specific audience, and treat it as a volume business with a long tail, where a small number of designs produce most of the income.
Which means the work is design and marketing rather than the mechanics. Uploading is easy and the platforms handle everything else, so the mechanics are not where the difficulty is and they are what courses spend their time on.
Where it works. A specific community with an identity: a profession, a hobby, a city, a language, an interest. A design that means something to a defined group outperforms a generic attractive one by a wide margin, because people buy the identity rather than the graphic.
Where it does not. General designs with no audience, and anything competing in a saturated category.
Two routes. Marketplaces, where the traffic exists and the competition and the fees are high. Or your own store with a print supplier behind it, where you must bring the traffic and keep considerably more.
And it is genuinely passive after the work, which is the real attraction and which is also why the work at the front has to be substantial.
Find a specific community with an identity rather than a general design idea. People buy the identity rather than the graphic.
