One real presentation, planned on paper, delivered to people, recorded

The situation

Take a presentation you actually have to give. Plan it on paper before opening any software, build a deck of five to seven slides on the Slide Master with headline titles, rebuild one chart to carry one message, write the difficult-news slide honestly, rehearse three times and record the third, then deliver it to a real audience and ask one person one specific question. The recording of the real delivery is the deliverable.

What you'll be able to show

  • Decide audience, the one sentence and the ask before touching software
  • Build slides with one idea each, headline titles, and readable type
  • Present a chart with one message and say what it does not show
  • Rehearse standing and timed, and deliver to real people

What you need

  • PowerPoint (or an equivalent with a slide master and presenter view)
  • One chart you have made or found, with its data
  • A real audience this month and a phone to record

Tasks

  1. 1Paper first
For a presentation you must give: write who the audience is, the ONE sentence they must remember, what you want them to do afterwards, and the three points that support the sentence. No software yet.
A correct result: The paper plan photographed: audience, sentence, ask, three points.
  2. 2The deck
Five to seven slides from the plan: one idea each, headline titles that state findings, no more than six words per bullet, everything 24pt or larger, one font, built on the Slide Master.
A correct result: The deck, with the Slide Master view shown.
  3. 3The chart and the hard slide
Rebuild one chart for a slide: one message, gridlines and clutter removed, one element highlighted, the finding as the title, plus the spoken sentence about what it does not show. Then write the slide that delivers a difficult message honestly, with the next step on it.
A correct result: Before and after of the chart, the not-shown sentence, and the difficult-message slide.
  4. 4Three rehearsals
Rehearse aloud, standing, three times, timing each. Record the third and watch it: facing the audience or the screen, speaking pace, where you paused. Then practise once in Presenter View with your notes.
A correct result: Three timings, the third recording with three observations.
  5. 5Ready for the room
Compress the images, export a PDF backup, and run the pre-presentation checklist: the file opens on another machine, fonts hold, the clicker or keys work, the first slide is up before anyone arrives.
A correct result: The PDF backup and the ticked checklist.
  6. 6Real people
Present to a real audience this month (a class, a team, a family gathering). Record it. Afterwards ask one person one specific question about your delivery and write down the answer and the one thing you will change next time.
A correct result: The recording, the question, the answer, and the one change.
