Personal Branding · Lesson 1 of 5

What this actually is

Separate a reputation from self-promotion.

Personal branding sounds like posting about yourself. What it means in practice is simpler: when someone looks you up, what do they find, and does it help them decide?

They will look. A client before a first contract, an employer before an interview, a colleague before a meeting. That search happens whether or not you have thought about it, and the result is your brand, assembled by accident if you did not assemble it.

The most common result is nothing at all. No profile, no work, no trace. That is not neutral; it means the person deciding has nothing to go on but your claims, and claims from a stranger are weak evidence.

Three things make the difference:

Findable. You exist, with a consistent name and a current photo, somewhere they will look.

Clear. What you do is stated in words a non-specialist understands. *"Digital enthusiast"* tells nobody anything; *"I build WooCommerce shops for Pakistani retailers"* is immediately usable.

Credible. There is evidence, work, results, something you made: not just adjectives about yourself.

Credible is the one people skip: because it takes actual work. Anyone can write *hardworking and detail-oriented*. Very few can show three finished things.

And this is not about becoming a public figure. Most people who benefit from this post rarely. They simply have a clear profile and visible work, so that when someone checks, the answer is reassuring instead of empty.

Lab — try it yourself

Search your own name as a stranger would, in a private browser window, with the spelling a client would use. Write down exactly what a person deciding whether to hire you would learn. For most people the honest answer is 'nothing', and that is the starting point.
