Getting Paid from Pakistan · Lesson 1 of 5
The problem, stated plainly
Understand why this is harder here.
A freelancer in most countries connects a bank account and is paid. In Pakistan there are extra steps, and knowing why removes most of the frustration.
PayPal does not operate for receiving payments in Pakistan. This is the first thing everybody discovers. Do not use a relative's foreign PayPal account or an account registered to another country. It violates their terms, the account gets frozen with the money in it, and recovering it is difficult or impossible. People lose real money this way every month.
Foreign currency reaching Pakistan is regulated. Inflows come through channels the State Bank recognises, and your bank will ask about the source of funds. This is normal, and having a clean record makes it routine rather than difficult.
So the practical routes are few: Payoneer, Wise, a direct bank wire, or the platform's own payout where one exists. Each has different costs, speeds and limits.
Then there is the currency question. Money can arrive in dollars and be converted, or arrive converted. The rate you get and the fees at each step vary more than people expect, and on a regular income the difference over a year is significant.
The right approach is to measure rather than to follow advice. Send one small payment through each route you are considering, record what arrived, and choose on the actual number. Everything in the next lessons is about how to do that properly.
And verify current rules before acting. Regulations here change, and a forum post from two years ago is not a source.
Write down every route you currently use to receive money and what you believe each costs. Then check one of those beliefs against the provider.
