Why you are avoiding it
Understand the cost of the delay.
Every difficult conversation you are avoiding is getting more difficult while you avoid it. That is the whole argument for having it now.
What avoidance actually costs. The problem continues, and the longer it continues the more it looks like you accepted it. Your resentment builds, so when you finally speak it comes out sharper than you intended and the other person hears anger rather than information. They are ambushed, and they are right to feel that: nobody told them for four months. And everyone else can see the problem and is waiting to find out whether you will address it.
What you are actually afraid of. Usually one of four things: that they will be upset, that they will argue, that you will be wrong, or that the relationship will change. Naming yours makes it smaller, and it also tells you what to prepare.
The false comfort of hinting. Vague remarks, jokes with an edge, hoping they will notice. They will not notice, and if they do they will not be sure, so nothing changes and you have spent the discomfort anyway.
The conversation is almost always less bad than the anticipation. Most people, told clearly and kindly that something is a problem, respond reasonably. The dramatic reaction you have been imagining is rare, and when it does happen it is usually a response to how it was said rather than to what was said.
Set a date. Not "soon". Put it in the calendar this week. Difficult conversations do not become easy with time; they become overdue.
