Conversion Rate Optimisation · Lesson 1 of 5

More customers from the visitors you already have

Understand why this is the cheapest growth available.

Most businesses try to grow by getting more traffic, which costs money continuously. Improving the proportion of visitors who buy costs once and applies to every visitor afterwards, including the ones you were already paying for.

The arithmetic. A site converting two percent that reaches three percent has increased revenue by half without spending anything more on advertising. Doubling the traffic to achieve the same result doubles the advertising cost permanently.

Which is why this is the first thing to work on for any business already spending on acquisition, and it is almost always done last.

What conversion actually means depends on the business: a purchase, an enquiry, a message, a booking, a signup. Define it before measuring anything.

Where visitors are lost. They do not understand what you offer. They do not trust you. They cannot find the price. They cannot find how to contact you. The form is too long. The page is too slow. Or it does not work on their phone.

Almost every one of those is fixable in an afternoon, which is what makes this work unusually well rewarded relative to the effort.

Start by watching somebody use it, which is the single most informative thing available. Five people, no instructions, no explaining, and note every hesitation. It finds more in half an hour than any amount of analysis.

Lab — try it yourself

Watch five people use your site or page with no explanation. Note every hesitation. It finds more than any analysis.
