Cold Outreach · Lesson 1 of 5

Why most cold messages fail

Understand what you are competing with.

The person you are messaging receives dozens of these and deletes almost all of them without reading past the first line. Everything about writing one follows from that.

Why they get deleted. They are obviously a template. They open with the sender rather than the recipient. They are long. They ask for a call from somebody who does not yet know why they would want one. And they contain nothing specific about the person being written to.

The single thing that separates a message that gets a reply is evidence that you looked at them specifically. Not a merged name field, which everybody recognises, but something you could only know by having looked.

Which means volume is the wrong strategy. Two hundred generic messages produce nothing and damage your reputation and your sending domain. Twenty researched messages produce a handful of conversations, and the arithmetic favours the second by a wide margin once you count the time spent on replies rather than on sending.

Be realistic about the rate. A good response rate on genuine cold outreach is small, and somebody promising high rates is describing an audience that already knew them.

And be aware of the rules. Unsolicited commercial messages are regulated in several markets your clients may be in, and a message to a European or British business has requirements attached. Ignoring them is a risk to your own domain more than a legal one for most small senders, and it is worth knowing rather than discovering.

Lab — try it yourself

Read the last cold message you received and note why you deleted it. Yours is being read the same way.
