Business Plan Writing · Lesson 1 of 5

Who the plan is for

Write the right document for the reader.

A business plan is not one document. What it contains depends entirely on who will read it, and writing the wrong one for the reader is why so many plans achieve nothing.

For yourself. The most useful version and the one people skip. What you are doing, for whom, how the money works, what could go wrong, and what you will do in the first ninety days. Five pages, honest, including the parts that worry you. Its purpose is to force you to write down what you have been assuming, which is where the gaps become visible.

For a bank. They are assessing whether you can repay. The emphasis is on cash flow, security, your track record and the realism of your numbers. A bank does not need your vision and does need to see that you understand your costs.

For an investor. They are assessing whether this can become large and whether you can build it. The emphasis is on the market size, the growth, the team and why now.

For a partner or a grant. Something between, depending on what they are deciding.

The common failure is writing the investor version for a bank, or writing a forty page document because a template said so. Ask what the reader is deciding and write what answers that.

And for most small businesses in Pakistan, the version for yourself is the only one needed, because most start without external funding and the plan's job is clarity rather than persuasion.

Lab — try it yourself

Write the five page version for yourself before any other. Its purpose is to make your assumptions visible, which is the useful part.
