Active Listening · Lesson 1 of 5
Why nobody is taught this
Notice what you are actually doing while listening.
Communication training is almost entirely about speaking: presentations, writing, persuasion. The other half is untaught, and it is the half that decides whether anything worked.
What most people do instead of listening. They wait. While the other person speaks, they are preparing their reply, thinking of a similar experience of their own, or deciding whether they agree. All three feel like listening and none of them is.
The clearest test. Can you state the other person's position well enough that they would say yes, that is what I meant? Most people cannot, including after a long conversation, because they were assembling a response rather than receiving one.
What poor listening costs. Work done wrong because the brief was misheard. Clients who leave because they did not feel understood. Colleagues who stop raising problems because nothing happens when they do. Conflicts that continue because both sides are arguing with a version of the other they constructed.
Why it is hard. You think several times faster than anybody speaks, so there is spare capacity and it fills with your own thoughts. Silence is uncomfortable. And listening properly means considering that you might be wrong, which is effortful.
The reframe. Listening is not waiting politely. It is actively working to understand somebody else's meaning, which is harder than speaking and produces far more.
In your next conversation, notice what you do while the other person speaks. Most people find they were preparing a reply.
اگلی گفتگو میں دیکھیں کہ دوسرے کے بولتے وقت آپ کیا کر رہے ہیں۔ زیادہ تر لوگ پاتے ہیں کہ وہ جواب تیار کر رہے تھے۔
