Set up a computer you could hand to somebody

The situation

A relative has just bought a used laptop for their small business and has asked you to set it up so they can work on it from tomorrow: files where they can find them, a proper email address, their most important folder backed up, and the accounts protected against the scams that hit older relatives first.

Everything here is real. By the end, the laptop is genuinely ready and you have proved each step.

What you'll be able to show

  • Organise files so somebody else can find them
  • Prove a backup by restoring from it
  • Type without looking and use the shortcuts that replace the mouse
  • Protect an email account with two-factor authentication and the OTP rule

What you need

  • A Windows computer (yours or the relative's)
  • A free typing-practice site
  • A Google Drive or OneDrive account

Tasks

  1. 1Know the machine
Open This PC and record: total storage, free storage, RAM, and Windows version. Open three programs, switch between them from the taskbar, minimise one, maximise another, close the third.
A correct result: Four numbers written down, and the window juggling done without the mouse leaving the taskbar.
  2. 2Folders a stranger can read
Create three top-level folders for the business (for example Customers, Money, Documents) with sensible sub-folders. Move at least ten scattered files into them, renaming each with a year-first date and a clear name (2026-09-20 invoice Raza.pdf).
A correct result: Ten renamed files in the right places; a screenshot of the folder tree.
  3. 3A backup that has been tested
Install Google Drive or OneDrive, put the most important folder in it, wait for sync. Then delete one file from the folder, and restore it from the Recycle Bin. Then open drive.google.com or onedrive.com in a browser and confirm the folder is there.
A correct result: The deleted file back in place, and the folder visible in the browser on the cloud side.
  4. 4Typing, measured
Do a 15-minute typing session on a free site without looking at the keys. Record words per minute and accuracy. Repeat on two more days and record again.
A correct result: Three dated WPM and accuracy figures.
  5. 5Twelve shortcuts, in real use
In a real document, use each of the twelve shortcuts from lesson 3 at least once (copy, paste, undo, select all, find, save, new tab, switch window, and the rest). Tick each off as you use it.
A correct result: A ticked list of twelve.
  6. 6Email and one government fact
Create a professional email address in the business's name if it does not have one. Send yourself an email with a subject line and an attachment; use CC and BCC once each. Then find one official government fee or requirement on the department's own site — not a blog — and note the URL.
A correct result: A sent email with attachment, and a .gov.pk (or equivalent official) URL.
  7. 7Lock the doors
Turn on two-factor authentication for the email account. Change any password that is reused elsewhere. Write the OTP rule on a card by the laptop: nobody legitimate ever needs your code. Then explain the rule to the relative and have them repeat it back.
A correct result: 2FA on, reused passwords changed, the card written, and the relative can say the rule in their own words.

What to hand in

A one-page setup report: the four machine numbers, the folder tree screenshot, the restore proof, the three typing figures, the ticked shortcut list, the email and URL, and the security steps completed.
