A week of your own messages, rewritten and sent

The situation

The raw material is your own writing: the messages you actually send about work or study this week. You will rewrite the weak ones, send real ones with the course's structures, raise a real problem with somebody senior, summarise a real meeting within the hour, and turn one thing you did into a paragraph you can use for years.

What you'll be able to show

  • Put the ask and the deadline in the first two lines
  • Write a status update whose third line is honest
  • Raise a mistake with somebody senior — respectfully and clearly, both
  • Turn a piece of real work into a CV paragraph, a post and an interview answer

What you need

  • Your own sent messages from the last week
  • One real email you need to send, one real meeting or group discussion this week
  • One person willing to read your writing back to you

Tasks

  1. 1Audit three of your own
Take the last three work or study messages you sent. For each, could the reader tell exactly what you wanted and by when? Rewrite the weakest in two sentences or fewer.
A correct result: Three verdicts and one rewrite.
  2. 2Send a real email properly
Write and send an email you actually need to send: request in line one, deadline in line two, reason in line three, detail after. Write the subject line so the whole request is visible without opening it.
A correct result: The sent email, with a subject line that is the request.
  3. 3A status update, honestly
For a task you are responsible for right now, write and send a three-line update: done / next / blockers. If the honest third line is "nothing blocks me, I have not started", write that.
A correct result: Three lines, sent, with a true third line.
  4. 4Raise a mistake upward
Find a real error in something a teacher or team lead made (there is always one). Write, word for word, how you tell them: acknowledge, state plainly, offer an option. Read it aloud once, then send or say it.
A correct result: The three-step message, and what happened when you delivered it.
  5. 5Summarise a meeting within the hour
After your next class meeting, group discussion or work call, send the summary within one hour: who does what, by when, when you next check in. Note any corrections that come back.
A correct result: The summary with its send time, and the corrections (if any) — corrections mean it worked.
  6. 6One thing you did, three ways
Write 150–250 words on something real you did: situation, what you did, measurable result. Then cut it to a CV paragraph (three lines), a post, and a one-minute interview answer.
A correct result: One source paragraph and three versions.
  7. 7The read-back
Give tasks 2, 3 and 4 to your reader. Ask them, for each, what you want them to do. Fix any they misread.
A correct result: Three answers from the reader and the fixes.

What to hand in

The audit, the four sent messages (email, update, upward message, summary) with their outcomes, the paragraph and its three versions, and the reader's answers.
